Tis the Season for QR Codes

So on my morning stroll to my car this morning I noticed a QR code stuck on the inside of someone's storm door. Intrigued, I whipped out my little smart phone and scanned that bad boy. I'm glad I did because I had just decoded the best holiday decoration ever. The QR code read "Happy Holidays!" That was by far the best (nerdiest) holiday decoration I've ever seen. What and idea! This got my braining spinning as to the hundreds of holiday QR code applications one could use. I've mocked up a few.

Upside-down iPhone/iPad photos in email

Recently I've received complaints from clients that iphotos in their HTML email messages are appearing upside-down in their iPad/iPhone email client, regardless of screen orientation.

After some thorough testing I concluded the following:

Photos taken with the iPhone and iPad have orientation meta data embedded in them that displays the photo how it was intended to be displayed at the time it was captured. Without this meta data the photo will be displayed as its' original orientation, so in some cases it appears upside-down.
For some reason photos taken with an iPad or iPhone, that are sent via email and displayed in the iPad or iPhone email client, ignore the orientation meta data and display pictures at their original orientation.

To avoid this issue when taking pictures of yourself using the pinhole camera on the front of an iPad or iPhone, take all photos as landscape with the home button to the left.

To avoid this issue when taking pictures of something else using the regular camera on the back of an iPad or iPhone, take all photos as landscape with the home button to the right.
